Mexico City, Mexico – Mexico’s National Seismological Service reported intense tectonic activity following the powerful earthquake that struck the country last night. A staggering 936 aftershocks were recorded as of this morning, keeping residents on high alert.
Earthquake data and focal point
The main earthquake measured 6.5 on the Richter scale (according to Mexican national estimates), while the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) measured it at 6.3.
The epicenter was in the southern state of Guerrero. The depth was shallow, no more than 10 kilometers below the Earth’s surface. Authorities cite this as the primary reason for the intensity of the tremor and the wide area affected.
The tremors extended to the capital, Mexico City, and the states of Morelos, Jalisco, Oaxaca, Tabasco, and Colima.
Human toll and field damage
Mexico City Mayor Clara Brugada reported at least 12 injuries within the capital. Meanwhile, emergency and civil defense teams continue assessments in Guerrero state (the earthquake’s epicenter), where there are growing concerns about extensive damage in mountainous and remote areas.
