Cairo, Egypt – The Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, Ahmed Aboul Gheit, expressed his deep concern regarding the rapid and dangerous developments taking place in the Republic of Yemen.
This comes amid escalating political and security tensions following the Southern Transitional Council’s failure
to respond to the demands of the Presidential Leadership Council.
He warned of the repercussions of continued escalation on the country’s unity and stability.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, Abu al-Gheit said that the Arab League is following
with great concern what is happening in the governorates of Hadramawt and Al-Mahra in eastern Yemen.
The situation in Yemen
Expressing his hope for an immediate halt to any escalation or actions that would complicate
the Yemeni situation and increase the suffering of the people,
Which is facing extremely difficult humanitarian and economic conditions.
The Secretary-General called on all member states of the coalition supporting legitimacy
to maintain the spirit of Arab solidarity in this critical situation.
He stressed the importance of exercising restraint and adhering to the unified Arab position supporting Yemeni legitimacy.
This is in compliance with the successive resolutions of the Council of
the League of Arab States regarding the Yemeni crisis.
Aboul Gheit reiterated his categorical condemnation of any military moves aimed
at forcibly imposing a separatist reality on the ground.
Threat to Yemeni territorial integrity
He stressed that such practices threaten the unity of Yemeni territory and cause serious harm to the cause of the South.
Which must be addressed through comprehensive political dialogue,
not by imposing a fait accompli or resorting to arms.
He stressed that separatist tendencies do not serve the interests of Yemen or the aspirations of its people,
but rather represent a direct threat to Arab national security.
This is in light of increasing regional challenges.
He stressed that the solution in Yemen remains fundamentally political,
based on dialogue, consensus and respect for legitimate institutions.
This will ensure the preservation of the unity of the Yemeni state
and the achievement of security and stability in the region.
