Cairo, Egypt – Arab League Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit strongly condemned the Israeli move regarding the recognition of
what is known as Somaliland as an independent state, issued by the Israeli Prime Minister on Friday.
The Secretary-General affirmed in a statement today that the League completely rejects this step,
considering it a clear violation of the rules of international law.
This is a blatant violation of the principle of territorial integrity and state sovereignty,
which is a fundamental pillar of the United Nations Charter and international relations.
Israel’s admission is a clear violation of international law
Aboul Gheit considered this move by an occupying power that commits grave violations
against the Palestinian people on a daily basis to be a serious violation.
Palestine’s neighboring countries ignore international legitimacy resolutions.
This constitutes an Israeli attack on the sovereignty of an Arab and African state,
aimed at working with third parties.
This is to undermine the stability of the region, far removed from any commitment to
the rules governing the recognition of states under international law.
Somaliland is an integral part of the Republic of Somalia
Jamal Rushdi, the official spokesperson for the Secretary-General,
confirmed that the League Council,
at both the summit and ministerial levels,
What is known as Somaliland is considered an integral part of
the internationally recognized sovereign Federal Republic of Somalia.
He stressed that any attempt to impose unilateral recognitions
would constitute unacceptable interference in Somalia’s internal affairs.
This is a dangerous precedent that threatens regional and international security and stability.
