Washington, DC – Two members of the US Congress, Representatives Thomas Massie and Ro Khanna, announced their intention to hold Attorney General Pam Bondi in contempt of Congress. This comes in response to the Justice Department’s failure to release all files related to the investigation into billionaire Jeffrey Epstein and his associate Ghislaine Maxwell.
The issue stems from the Epstein Files Transparency Act, which requires the Justice Department to fully disclose all documents related to investigations into the exploitation of minors and sex trafficking. Although thousands of pages were released before the deadline, much of the material was redacted or incomplete. Regardless of the deadline, the images of public and political figures were withheld, prompting outrage in Congress and demands for full disclosure.
The two lawmakers are seeking to activate contempt of Congress charges, which would allow for daily fines to be imposed on the Secretary of State for each day of delay in releasing the files. Legal experts believe this move may face some complications, but it is considered the quickest way to compel officials to comply with legislative decisions.
Recent developments reflect mounting political and legal pressure on the U.S. Department of Justice. This comes amid questions about the government’s commitment to transparency and accountability in sensitive matters.
