Beijing, China – China’s Ministry of National Defense issued a strongly worded warning on Friday, vowing to take “strong measures” to safeguard its national sovereignty. This came in response to the United States’ recent announcement of its largest-ever arms sale to Taiwan, worth over $11.1 billion.
Beijing: “Like a moth drawn to a flame”
A Chinese defense spokesperson strongly criticized Washington, asserting that Beijing had lodged “strong protests” through diplomatic channels. He described Taiwan’s US-backed military buildup as “political suicide,” stating, “Attempting to achieve independence by force will only lead to self-destruction, like a moth drawn to a flame.”
Beijing accused separatist forces in Taiwan of squandering hard-earned public funds to enrich US military companies at the expense of regional security.
A Ukrainian arsenal is on its way to Taipei
This deal comes just a month after Washington approved the supply of spare parts for Taiwanese fighter jets. However, the new package features “smart and offensive” weapons that have proven their effectiveness on modern battlefields.
Trump consolidates support through the “Defense Act”
The escalation coincided with US President Donald Trump’s signing of the National Defense Authorization Act for 2026 on Thursday. The massive bill allocates $910 billion and includes an explicit provision for an additional $1 billion to support security cooperation projects with Taiwan. This move reflects a consistent US policy of strengthening deterrence in the Taiwan Strait.
