New York, USA – New York police have opened a broad investigation into the stabbing of a Jewish man in the Crown Heights neighborhood of Brooklyn on Tuesday. Authorities have described the attack as a “potential hate crime” motivated by antisemitism.
Details of the attack
The incident occurred shortly after 4:00 PM, just one block from the Chabad-Lubavitch world headquarters. According to police, the situation began with a brief verbal altercation between the 35-year-old victim and the suspect. The attacker made antisemitic remarks during the exchange.
The dispute later escalated into a physical altercation. During the fight, the suspect pulled out a sharp object and stabbed the victim in the chest before fleeing. Medical sources confirmed that the victim sustained minor injuries that were not life-threatening. He was taken to the hospital, received treatment, and was later discharged.
Security alert and intensive investigations
The New York Police Department released surveillance camera images of the suspect and deployed dozens of additional officers to search the Crown Heights neighborhood. This incident comes amid heightened security concerns:
The attack occurred near the headquarters of the Chabad movement, whose members were recently targeted in a shooting in Bondi, Australia, during Hanukkah celebrations.
Police had already increased security around the movement’s New York offices following the Sydney attack. But this incident occurred in the surrounding streets.
This search coincides with another police investigation in Brooklyn into a report of a possible anti-Semitic attack in a different area.
Current situation
The New York Police Department’s hate crimes unit is continuing to examine available evidence to identify the attacker. Meanwhile, there is growing concern within Brooklyn’s ultra-Orthodox Jewish community, with calls for increased security during the holiday season.
