Guatemala City – Guatemala declared a state of emergency in the western part of the country following an armed attack targeting a military base and a police station in Solola province. The attack left at least five people dead and others wounded, according to local authorities.

The attack, which took place in the towns of Nahuala and Santa Catarina Ixtahuacan, involved blocking main roads and hijacking passenger buses, causing panic among local residents and prompting the government to immediately implement heightened security measures.

Reasons for the attack and its background

The government confirmed that the attack was carried out by armed gangs involved in extortion and drug trafficking. These gangs aim to control strategic areas and block security forces. This incident is part of a surge in armed violence in western Guatemala in recent months, as gangs intensify their criminal activities to seize local resources and exert influence over the population.

Emergency procedures

Under the state of emergency declaration, security forces were granted expanded powers for rapid intervention. Measures included restricting public gatherings and imposing temporary limitations on civil rights, with the aim of restoring control over affected areas and preventing the spread of violence.

Local and international reactions

Local residents have expressed concern over the increasing activity of armed gangs. Human rights organizations have called on the government to act swiftly to protect civilians and ensure their safety. The declaration of a state of emergency comes at a time when the western part of the country is witnessing a significant escalation in armed attacks on security infrastructure.

This announcement comes as an exceptional step to ensure security and stability in western Guatemala, amid expectations of increased security measures in the coming days. The goal is to guarantee a return to normalcy and minimize risks to the civilian population.
