Berlin, Germany – German Chancellor Friedrich Merz warned of serious repercussions if Ukraine falls to Russia, stressing that Russian President Vladimir Putin will not be satisfied with that,
but will proceed with implementing an expansionist project that threatens the security and stability of Europe.
In a speech delivered on Saturday to the Bavarian Christian Social Union party conference in Munich,
Merz called for a careful reading of Putin’s strategy and public statements.
He stressed that ignoring these indicators would be a grave mistake.
It poses a direct threat
He said: “If Ukraine falls, Putin will not stop there.” Merz heads the Christian Democratic Party.
Together with the Bavarian Christian Social Union, they form what is known
as the “Christian Alliance,” the largest partner in Germany’s ruling coalition.
He asserted that Putin’s strategic goal is to “bring about a radical change in the borders of Europe,”
And the effort to re-establish the Soviet Union within its former borders.”
He warned that this trend poses a direct threat, including a military one,
to the countries that were part of that empire.
The German Chancellor stressed the need to continue supporting Ukraine politically
and militarily, considering this a fundamental pillar for protecting European security.
He also called for maintaining the cohesion of the European Union
and strengthening close ties with Britain.
Maintaining NATO as much as possible, along with significant investments
in European defense capabilities.
Security guarantees
In a related development, the French presidency announced that Europeans
and Ukrainians are demanding that the United States
By providing clear “security guarantees” before any negotiations concerning
the occupied Ukrainian territories in the east of the country.
An advisor to the French president explained that complete
transparency regarding these guarantees is required.
He noted that it might resemble “Article 5” of the NATO Charter.
The so-called “coalition of the willing” includes about 30 countries
that have expressed their readiness to support the Ukrainian army.
Some of them are to participate in a reassurance force following
any ceasefire agreement, to prevent renewed Russian attacks.
