Islamabad, Pakistan – Tensions have resurfaced along the Pakistani-Afghan border following renewed clashes between forces from both countries. This latest incident, occurring in recent hours, marks the most recent in a series of recurring confrontations in the shared border region.
According to security sources, clashes broke out near the town of Torkham following an exchange of fire. This followed a dispute over troop deployment locations, which led to the temporary closure of the border crossing and the suspension of movement and trade between the two sides.
Islamabad asserted that its forces “responded to direct provocations,” while Kabul accused the Pakistani army of attempting to alter the status quo on the ground. This comes as both sides emphasize their desire to avoid escalation, despite the ongoing exchange of accusations.
The border region between the two countries has witnessed frequent tensions due to security issues and the pursuit of armed groups. This is in addition to longstanding disputes over border demarcation. These developments come amidst international calls for both sides to exercise restraint and reopen channels of communication. The aim is to prevent the situation from escalating into a wider confrontation.
