Damascus, Syria – A delegation from the 15 member states of the UN Security Council arrived in Damascus on Thursday for a historic visit. This is the first such visit since the start of the Syrian conflict more than a decade ago. The visit comes as part of the international community’s efforts to revive the political process and open direct dialogue with the Syrian government, amid hopes of easing tensions and advancing settlement efforts.
Syrian state media reported that the delegation will hold a series of meetings with government officials and local political figures. They will also visit conflict-affected areas to assess the humanitarian situation, bolster reconstruction efforts, and facilitate the delivery of international aid to those affected.
According to diplomatic sources, the visit will last several days. A joint statement will be issued at its conclusion outlining the outcomes of the meetings and future steps for cooperation between the Security Council and Syria in the humanitarian, political, and security fields.
This visit reflects the UN’s commitment to increased coordination with Damascus. Direct dialogue is a crucial step in addressing the crisis that has persisted for over a decade. This signals a diplomatic move that could mark a turning point in international relations with Syria.
