This caused a wave of panic among local residents
who rushed outside to escape the dilapidated buildings.
Authorities reported that the epicenter of the earthquake
was below the Earth’s surface at a moderate depth.
This made the tremor felt in large areas of the island.
While no official tsunami warning has been issued yet.
Estimating the extent of damage
Emergency teams have also begun initial surveys to assess the extent of the damage.
Some residents reported cracks in houses and temporary power outages.
Government agencies urged citizens in Sumatra to exercise caution.

Seismic activity is frequent in Indonesia due to its location
within the “Ring of Fire” in the Pacific Ocean.
