Washington, United States – A U.S. National Guard soldier was wounded Wednesday in a shooting by an Afghan suspect near government buildings in Washington, before security forces shot and apprehended him.
The suspect, Rahmanullah Lakhanwal (29), arrived in the United States in 2021 after serving ten years in the Afghan army, and was granted asylum in 2024.
Authorities confirmed that the incident was a “lone wolf” act, but the event sparked widespread debate about security gaps in the capital and policies for receiving Afghan migrants.
The incident left two National Guard members in critical condition, while authorities stressed the importance of reviewing security and immigration procedures to avoid a recurrence of such events.
