Paris, France – France’s highest court on Wednesday upheld the conviction of former French President Nicolas Sarkozy, 70, in a case concerning Libyan funding of his 2012 re-election campaign.
Sarkozy, a former president, was convicted on September 25 of “belonging to a criminal organization.” This stemmed from his knowingly allowing his associates to secretly solicit funding for his victorious presidential campaign from Libya, then under the leadership of Muammar Gaddafi.
Electronic bracelets and anticipated resumption
Sarkozy had spent three weeks in prison. Then, on November 10, a Paris court ordered his early release but placed him under surveillance by wearing an electronic bracelet.
The former head of state pleaded not guilty and appealed the verdict against him. The appeal hearing is scheduled to take place between March 16 and June 3, 2026.
