Washington, DC – The Trump administration is considering a psychological warfare operation against Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro by dropping leaflets over the Venezuelan capital, Caracas, according to CBS News, citing US officials.
This proposal is part of an escalating campaign of pressure on the Maduro government, amid rising tensions between Washington and Caracas.
The appeals, intended to be dropped from US drones targeting the capital, Caracas, are aimed at undermining support for Maduro domestically and constitute psychological warfare.
Sources indicate the operation could be carried out on Sunday, coinciding with Maduro’s 63rd birthday, in a symbolic move to increase pressure.
Final approval for the plan has not yet been granted, and it remains under discussion.
Context of American escalation
This move comes as the United States intensifies its military presence in the Caribbean. This includes live-fire exercises and operations against suspected drug-trafficking vessels.
Some in the US administration insist that this pressure is not solely aimed at combating drug trafficking. It is also intended to force Maduro to step down.
Trump’s statements and Maduro’s response
When asked about the possibility of sending US troops to Venezuela, Trump said, “I don’t rule it out… We have to be careful with Venezuela.”
For his part, Maduro expressed his readiness to defy the US and asserted that covert US actions “will not intimidate the Venezuelan people and military.” He also called for “face-to-face” dialogue with Trump.
