Washington, DC – US President Donald Trump has issued a formal pardon to British billionaire Joe Lewis, the former owner of Tottenham Hotspur Football Club. This follows Lewis’s conviction in an insider trading case and his $5 million fine, which included probation instead of prison time.
Lewis, 88, admitted to sharing non-disclosed financial information with some of his associates and friends between 2019 and 2021. US authorities considered this a violation of securities laws. He was tried in New York. His sentence was reduced due to his age and his cooperation with investigators.
The presidential pardon, announced in an official statement, indicated that the decision was made in consideration of Lewis’s health condition. His wishes to receive medical treatment and visit his family in the United States were also taken into account.
It is worth noting that Joe Lewis had considerable influence at Tottenham before relinquishing direct management to his family in 2022. His investment group remains indirectly linked to the club.
The pardon sparked a wave of controversy in political and sporting circles, especially since Lewis is one of the world’s most prominent investors, making the decision a subject of extensive international media attention.
