South Korea – South Korea’s special prosecutor has formally charged the country’s former president with abuse of power and influence during his time in office, in a case that has sparked widespread controversy in political and media circles in Seoul.
The prosecution explained that the investigations revealed the former president’s direct interference in a number of sensitive government decisions, along with attempts to influence some institutions to achieve personal and political interests.
Korean media outlets indicated that the case could bring back memories of past political scandals that brought down former presidents, stressing that the special prosecutor’s office is seeking to present a new model of transparency and accountability to the public.
For its part, the defense team for the former president denied the accusations against him, describing them as “politically motivated,” and affirming that their client is ready to appear before the judiciary and prove his innocence.
Observers believe the new case represents a real test of South Korea’s justice system, which has long presented itself as one of the most rule-of-law democracies in Asia.
