Berlin, Germany – In a move that has sparked widespread controversy, German authorities have announced a new program aimed at reducing the number of asylum seekers by offering attractive financial incentives to Afghan nationals willing to voluntarily return to their country in exchange for withdrawing their asylum applications in Germany.
The German Interior Ministry said the initiative is part of a broader strategy aimed at “managing migration in a humane and orderly manner.” It also indicated that returnees will receive cash assistance to help them start a new life in their home country.
Through this program, Berlin aims to alleviate the growing pressure on refugee reception centers, particularly given the continued rise in the number of asylum seekers in recent months.
In contrast, human rights organizations criticized the move, deeming it “humanitarian blackmail” against asylum seekers. These individuals were forced to flee their countries due to conflict and deteriorating security conditions in Afghanistan.
