Washington, USA – Former Representative Abigail Spanberger, a Democrat, defeated Republican Lieutenant Governor Winsome Earle-Sears in the 2025 Virginia gubernatorial election. This victory restored Democratic control of the office after four years.
With 97% of the votes counted, the results showed Spanberger leading with 57.5% compared to Earl Sears’ 42.3%. Spanberger became the first woman to serve as governor of the state.
“Virginia has chosen pragmatism over partisanship,” Spanberger said during her victory speech in Richmond. “Leadership is focused on lowering costs, keeping our communities safe, and strengthening our economy.”
Spanberger’s victory is seen as an important indicator of voter sentiment ahead of the 2026 midterm elections. It also restores optimism to Democrats after last year’s losses.
