Indonesia – The Indonesian Meteorology Agency announced on Wednesday that a 6.2 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Sulawesi Island in the center of the country.
According to the statement issued by the agency, the earthquake’s epicenter was located in the sea at a depth of approximately 10 kilometers. This made it strongly felt in several coastal cities, but no immediate tsunami warning was issued.
The earthquake was felt across large parts of the island, with many rushing into the streets in a state of panic. There were no immediate reports of casualties or major damage.
Indonesia is one of the world’s most seismically active countries. It lies within the Pacific Ring of Fire, a region prone to frequent earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.
Local authorities and rescue teams continue to assess the situation on the ground, in anticipation of any aftershocks that may follow the earthquake in the coming hours.
