Sudan – A delegation from the transitional government, headed by Foreign Minister Ammar Amoun, met with a delegation from the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), headed by the Special Envoy to Sudan, Lawrence Korbandi. This meeting was part of regional and international efforts to end the war and establish peace in Sudan.
The two sides discussed ways to achieve a just and comprehensive peace. They also discussed a vision for establishing peace and unifying efforts to end the war and address the root causes of the national crisis.
Special Envoy Lawrence Korbandi affirmed that the meeting represents an important step within the IGAD consultations aimed at ending the conflict. He also noted that current efforts are being undertaken in joint coordination with the African Union, the Arab League, the United Nations, and the European Union. He explained that IGAD has been in contact with the Democratic Bloc and the Resilience Alliance, both of which have expressed their willingness to participate in the political process.
For his part, Foreign Minister Ammar Amoun commended IGAD’s efforts in advancing the peace process. He affirmed Sudan’s openness to all regional and international initiatives aimed at achieving a comprehensive and lasting peace in Sudan. He also stressed the need to address the imbalance in the distribution of power and wealth and to end marginalization and political exclusion.
Both parties agreed on the priority of an immediate cessation of hostilities and the continuation of IGAD-led consultations with all Sudanese parties. Preparations will be made for a meeting soon that will include the Founding Committee delegation and facilitators from IGAD, the African Union, the League of Arab States, and the United Nations. At this meeting, the Founding Committee will present its comprehensive peace plan.
