Jerusalem, Palestine – Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas issued a new constitutional declaration outlining the mechanism for assuming power in
the event that the position of President of the Palestinian National Authority becomes vacant,
especially in light of the absence of the Legislative Council.
According to the declaration, the Vice-Chairman of the Executive Committee of
the Palestine Liberation Organization and the Vice-President of the State of Palestine,
The duties of the presidency of the authority shall be temporary for a period not exceeding ninety days,
during which free and direct elections shall be held to choose a new president.
If elections cannot be held due to exceptional circumstances,
the period may be extended once by a decision of the Palestinian Central Council.
Hussein Al Sheikh currently holds the position of Vice Chairman of
the Executive Committee and Vice President of the State.
He will lead the Palestinian Authority temporarily if the position becomes vacant.

This announcement comes after the cancellation of Constitutional Declaration No. (1) of 2024.
It aims to regulate the mechanism for the transfer of power in
a constitutional manner in light of the continued absence of the Palestinian Legislative Council.
Which was dissolved by a decision of the Constitutional Court in 2018.
The announcement did not clarify whether the transitional president would be eligible to run in the upcoming elections.
While questions persist regarding the possibility of holding presidential
and legislative elections in light of the Palestinian division and the complexities of the situation in East Jerusalem.
