Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia – Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva announced a positive meeting with his US counterpart,
Donald Trump, on the sidelines of the ASEAN Summit in Malaysia.
During the meeting, delegations from the two countries agreed to begin
immediate negotiations to resolve the US tariff crisis on Brazilian exports.
Lula said in a message on the X website that the meetings would
discuss “solutions to the tariffs and sanctions imposed on Brazilian authorities,”
while Trump indicated the possibility of reaching deals that serve the interests of both countries.
The United States raised tariffs on most Brazilian exports from 10% to 50% last August,
which sparked trade tensions between the two countries, particularly in the beef sector.
Brazilian Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira confirmed that negotiations will begin immediately,
with the identification of the relevant sectors, and will be completed in the coming weeks.
