Indonesia – Indonesia was on high alert this morning after the eruption of Mount Laki-Laki on Flores Island in the east of the country, part of the Indonesian archipelago’s volcanic eruption chain.
What caused panic among the local residents and forced the authorities to evacuate hundreds of families from the surrounding areas due to the eruption of the Indonesian volcano archipelago.
Ash clouds and lightning in the sky
The Indonesian Meteorology, Seismology and Geophysics Agency reported that the volcano erupted, sending thick ash columns more than 2,000 meters above sea level, while ash clouds covered parts of neighboring villages, which are located within the Indonesian volcano archipelago.
It temporarily suspended air traffic at several nearby airports.
The area witnessed flashes of lightning within the volcanic clouds, a scene residents described as “night in broad daylight.”
Evacuation and warnings
Local authorities have declared a state of emergency following the eruption of a volcano on the Indonesian archipelago, urging residents to stay at least 5 kilometers away from the crater, in anticipation of further explosions or ashfall.
Protective masks were also distributed to residents due to high levels of sulfur ash in the air.
Archipelago of Fire
Indonesia is known for being located on the so-called “Ring of Fire,” a seismically and volcanically active area with more than 120 active volcanoes, making the country one of the world’s most vulnerable to such natural phenomena.
Mount Laki-Laki is an active volcano on Flores Island, and its last significant activity was recorded about five years ago as part of the Indonesian Archipelago Volcano Eruption.
