Cairo, Egypt – In a new step that strengthens international support for the Palestinian cause, the Republic of San Marino announced on Saturday evening its official recognition of the State of Palestine as an independent, sovereign state with secure, internationally recognized borders. This came during the Foreign Minister’s address to the United Nations General Assembly.

Highlights
  • Official recognition of the rights of the Palestinians
  • Joining a growing European bandwagon
  • A shift in the Western position

Official recognition of the rights of the Palestinians

San Marino’s Foreign Minister Luca Beccari affirmed that “the establishment of a Palestinian state is an inalienable right of the Palestinian people, in accordance with international legitimacy resolutions.” He emphasized that the recognition comes in support of the Palestinian people’s legitimate right to self-determination.

Joining a growing European bandwagon

With this move, San Marino joins France, Britain, Canada, and Portugal. These countries recently announced their recognition of Palestine during the current session of the General Assembly. Ten other European and Western countries, including Spain, Ireland, Norway, and Australia, also preceded them.

A shift in the Western position

Observers believe that this diplomatic momentum reflects a marked shift in the positions of European capitals. These capitals have become convinced that the continuation of Israeli policies based on the blockade and wars in Gaza undermines the chances of peace. Such continuation closes the door to negotiations.
