Kyiv, Ukraine – Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said he discussed with US Special Envoy Keith Kellogg the purchase of weapons from the United States that Kiev had previously requested.
Zelensky added in a post on the “X” platform: “(Kellogg) briefed him on the situation on the front and the results of the counter-offensive operation near the cities of Dobropilia and Pokrovsk, and we also touched on the development of cooperation between Ukraine and the United States”.
Two informed sources told Reuters last Tuesday that the first package of US military aid to Ukraine under President Donald Trump had received approval.
It also became possible to ship them soon after Washington resumed sending weapons to Kiev.
But this time it will be under a new financial agreement with the allies.
This is the first use of a new mechanism put in place by the United States and its allies to supply Ukraine with weapons from US stockpiles.
But these weapons come with funding from NATO member states.
The two sources said that US Under Secretary of Defense for Political Affairs Elbridge Colby approved up to two shipments worth $500 million.
This is under the new mechanism called “Ukraine Priority Requirements List”.
