Erdogan from New York: Syria’s unity is a red line and sends double messages to the region and the world

Erdogan's statements carry multiple messages: the first is to Turkey's domestic affairs, to emphasize its continued firm approach to the Syrian issue; the second is to Damascus, to open the door to direct dialogue after years of estrangement; and the third is to the world, to emphasize that Ankara remains a major player in major regional issues, whether in Syria or Palestine.

Cairo, Egypt – From the United Nations podium, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan reiterated that Ankara will not compromise in defending Syria’s unity. He considered that any separatist project threatens regional security and opens the door to further chaos. He explained that Turkey proceeds from the conviction that stability in Syria can only be achieved by preserving its full sovereignty and rejecting any geographic or political division.

Syrian interests come before international calculations

In his speech, Erdogan emphasized that the interests of Syrians must be the basis of any settlement, avoiding foreign interventions that have often turned the Syrian crisis into an arena for international conflict. He emphasized that partial solutions or privileges granted to specific factions will keep the crisis open and will not lead to stability or comprehensive national reconciliation.

Criticism of the international community

The Turkish president did not miss the opportunity to direct sharp criticism at the international community. He called for a more assertive stance toward Israel, whose policies he described as a major obstacle to peace in the region. He emphasized that turning a blind eye to Israeli violations undermines efforts to achieve a just solution to the Palestinian issue.

An upcoming meeting with Al-Sharaa

Erdogan revealed that he intends to meet with Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa on the sidelines of the General Assembly meetings. This move carries political implications that could open a new page between Ankara and Damascus. He confirmed that the talks will address the future of Syria, along with the Gaza Strip and Turkish-US relations. This indicates an attempt to link regional issues to create a comprehensive approach.

Speech at the “Two-State Solution” Summit

The Turkish president will also participate in a special UN summit to discuss the future of the two-state solution. This summit is a joint initiative of France and Saudi Arabia. Observers believe that Erdogan’s speech at this event will be a clear message of support for the Palestinian cause. This comes amid growing international recognition of the Palestinian state and the ongoing Israeli aggression against Gaza.

Political dimensions and multiple messages

Erdogan’s statements carry more than one message. The first is to Turkey’s domestic affairs, to emphasize its continued firm approach to the Syrian issue. The second is to Damascus, to open the door to direct dialogue after years of estrangement. The third is to the world, to emphasize that Ankara remains a major player in major regional issues, whether in Syria or Palestine.
