BEIJING, China – The Chinese Foreign Ministry affirmed Beijing’s respect for Afghanistan’s sovereignty on Friday.
She warned that the escalation of tensions and confrontations in the region does not receive any support.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Jian said in a press conference: “China respects Afghanistan’s independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity. It believes that Afghanistan’s future and destiny must be in the hands of the Afghan people”.
“Escalating tensions and creating confrontations in the region is contrary to the aspirations of the people,” he added.
These statements come after US President Donald Trump announced on Thursday that he is working to re-establish an American presence at Bagram Air Base in Afghanistan. This comes four years after the US withdrawal from the country.
Trump hinted at this idea during a press conference with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer.
He concluded an official visit to the United Kingdom. He linked it to the United States’ need to confront its biggest adversary: China.
“We’re trying to get it back,” Trump said of the base, in a side comment when asked about ending the war in Ukraine.
“One of the reasons we want Al Qaeda is, you know, it’s an hour away from where China is making nuclear weapons,” he added.
