Kiev, Ukraine – Russian forces attacked a thermal power generation facility in the Kiev region, the Ukrainian Energy Ministry said on Monday, highlighting the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine.

“The goal is clear: to cause more hardship to the peaceful population of Ukraine, leaving Ukrainian homes, hospitals, kindergartens, and schools without electricity or heating,” the Ukrainian Energy Ministry wrote on Telegram.

She added that rescuers and energy specialists are working at the site.

In Moscow, Sergei Lebedev, coordinator of pro-Russian secret working groups in the Nikolaev region, confirmed that Russian forces bombed the most powerful power plant in the Kyiv region.

“There were reports of an explosion at the Tripolskaya thermal power plant,” Lebedev said. Power was severely cut off in Kyiv Oblast and in Kyiv itself. The impact was massive, with local residents counting about seven explosions, according to the Russian news website Sputnik.

What is the importance of the Tripolskaya Electric Power Plant?

Tribulskaya Electric Power Plant is the most powerful power plant in Kyiv Oblast.

Operated in 1969, it is located on the banks of the Dnieper River, 13 kilometers from Kiev.

The station generated about 57% of the total energy consumed by companies in the region.

It was the largest supplier of electricity to Ukraine, supplying the Kyiv, Cherkasy and Zhytomyr regions.
