JAKARTA, Indonesia – Calm descended on the streets of the Indonesian capital, Jakarta, on Friday morning.
This came after more than a week of protests that were sometimes marred by violence. The Muslim-majority country was celebrating the birth of the Prophet.
Crowds led by students, workers and rights groups took to the streets of Jakarta last week.
To protest the housing allowances received by representatives.
The unrest spread across Indonesia after a police car hit and killed a motorcycle taxi driver in a demonstration.
On Thursday, groups of students met with government ministers. They presented their complaints about MPs’ privileges and the tactics used by police against demonstrators.
Student representatives also met with a number of members of Parliament earlier in the week.
But they have not yet succeeded in achieving their demands for a meeting with President Prabowo Subianto.
Human rights organizations say that 10 people were killed. Additionally, more than a thousand people were injured in clashes with security forces and other disturbances.
Human Rights Watch said that the authorities arrested more than 3,000 people.
