Tehran, Iran – Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi will hold a joint phone call with Western powers to discuss nuclear talks and sanctions, the Iranian News Agency (IRNA) said.

The agency explained that Araqchi will make contact with his counterparts from France, Britain and Germany, today, Friday.

The three European powers threaten to activate the mechanism for the rapid return of United Nations sanctions on Iran. This will occur if Iran does not return to the negotiating table.

European powers had given Tehran until the end of August to return to negotiations and allow inspections. Otherwise, it would face consequences through the Security Council.

Iran rejected the threat.

She considered that restoring sanctions would be an illegal act. This hinted at the possibility of her withdrawal from the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.

Consultations with Washington

IAEA officials are scheduled to travel to Washington next week to consult with the United States.

There are concerns about the agency’s inability to track Iran’s stockpile of semi-bomb-making uranium.

This comes at a time when the IAEA is increasingly pessimistic about the chances of its inspectors returning to Iran. The inspectors were expelled during the war with Israel in June.

This expulsion effectively ended international oversight of Tehran’s nuclear scope and capabilities.
