Tehran, Iran – The Iranian art scene has lost one of its most prominent figures, both in the arts and cinema, with the passing of beloved actress Shirin Yazdanbakhsh, who died on Thursday evening (December 25, 2025). Her death followed complications from a stroke she had suffered since October.
A peaceful departure, just as she wished
The deceased was laid to rest on Friday in Cemetery No. 70 at Behesht-e Zahra in Tehran. The funeral was limited to a small number of family members, in accordance with her wishes. She had preferred to remain silent about her illness and not publicize it, choosing to pass away quietly away from the limelight.
From “tobacco” to the spotlight by chance
Yazdanbakhsh was born in Isfahan in 1948 and lived a life far removed from the arts for over three decades. She worked for the Tobacco Corporation for 32 years and only entered the world of acting after her retirement, purely by chance. This came about following a suggestion from the artist Afshin Hashemi. She began her artistic career relatively late in life, but quickly secured a unique place in the hearts of the public.
“Aunt” of the theater and “Mother” of cinema
The late actress was affectionately known as “Aunt Sherine” among theater professionals, while moviegoers affectionately called her “Mother.” She became a symbol of the loving and simple mother. Although most of her roles were minor and brief, they were distinguished by their emotional depth and innate sincerity. This ensured her lasting and enduring impact on viewers.
A career full of awards
Despite her short career, it was rich in achievements. One of its highlights was winning the “Simorgh Crystal” award for Best Supporting Actress for her first role in the film “Please Don’t Disturb Me” (Fajr Film Festival 28).
She was nominated for the same award for her iconic role in the film “Forever and a Day” (Fajr Festival 34).
She has appeared in notable films such as Asghar Farhadi’s “A Separation”, “Kissing on the Moon”, “Beautiful Trash”, and “Melbourne”.
Shirin passed away, leaving behind a legacy of roles in which she embodied the kindness and simplicity of the Iranian people. Her image as a loving mother remains etched in the memory of Iranian cinema.
