Britain relies on a smaller number of foreign doctors compared to other Western countries... What's the story?

London, UK – Recent reports reveal that the UK relies on far fewer foreign doctors than most Western countries. This highlights a clear gap in the British healthcare sector.

The report indicates that strict immigration policies and work permit requirements have made it difficult to recruit foreign medical personnel. This is despite the country suffering from a severe shortage of doctors and nurses, which exacerbates the pressure on hospitals and affects the quality of healthcare services provided to citizens.

Public health experts say that the limited reliance on foreign doctors makes the British health system less resilient in the face of crises such as the coronavirus pandemic or a surge in demand for medical services. This contrasts with Western countries that allow the recruitment of a larger number of foreign professionals to meet their needs.

The report added that urgent reforms are needed in medical recruitment and training policies. These reforms should ensure an increased number of qualified physicians while maintaining safety and quality standards. This is necessary to prevent a decline in healthcare standards and an increased burden on local staff.
