Voice of Emirates – Doctors have warned against a common misconception that dehydration is limited to the summer months. They emphasized that winter poses a greater risk of hidden dehydration, which threatens vital bodily functions. This is especially true given that the sensation of thirst can decrease by up to 40% in cold weather.
Doctors explained that dry indoor heating, rapid breathing of cold air, and increased urination all contribute to fluid loss without the person being aware of it.
Doctors pointed out that even mild dehydration, as low as one to two percent, can cause headaches, fatigue, and difficulty concentrating. It also increases blood viscosity and raises the risk of high blood pressure and heart strain. Furthermore, it increases the likelihood of developing kidney stones and urinary tract infections, as well as causing dry skin and joint stiffness.
Doctors confirmed that water makes up about 60 percent of the human body. Water is essential for kidney function and digestion. They recommended that adults consume between two and two and a half liters of fluids daily. These fluids include soups and fruits. They also emphasized the importance of consulting a doctor for patients with chronic illnesses.
Doctors also recommended compensating for a diminished sense of thirst by drinking warm beverages. They advised consuming fruits and vegetables rich in water, while simultaneously warning against excessive caffeine, sugary drinks, and salty foods, as these contribute to increased fluid loss.
The doctors concluded their warnings by emphasizing that hydration is not limited to a specific season. Rather, it is a daily necessity for maintaining the body’s health during the winter months.
