Abu Dhabi, UAE – The United Arab Emirates has expressed its close monitoring of US President Donald Trump’s announcement of a two-week ceasefire between the United States and Iran. It also stressed the necessity of Iran’s full commitment to ceasing all hostilities. Additionally, it emphasized the need for the complete and unconditional reopening of the Strait of Hormuz.
Details of the UAE’s position
The UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed in a statement that Iranian attacks over the past 40 days targeted infrastructure, energy facilities, and civilian sites. These attacks, which involved approximately 2,760 missile and drone strikes, resulted in significant human and material losses. The Ministry indicated that these attacks necessitate a firm stance and accountability for Iran. It also stressed the need for full compensation for the damages and losses.
Addressing Iranian threats
The UAE stressed that addressing Iranian threats must encompass all military and terrorist capabilities, including nuclear weapons, ballistic missiles, drones, and its proxies in the region. Furthermore, freedom of navigation must be guaranteed. Economic warfare and piracy in the Strait of Hormuz must also be prevented. The UAE also expressed its hope for achieving lasting peace for all countries in the region through Iran’s adherence to international resolutions.
UAE diplomatic efforts
The Ministry clarified that the UAE was not a party to the war. It exerted intensive diplomatic efforts through bilateral channels and via the Gulf Cooperation Council to prevent escalation. It also affirmed its firm commitment to protecting its sovereignty, security, and national interests. The Ministry stressed the necessity for Iran to implement UN Security Council Resolution 2817, adopted on March 11, 2016. This resolution condemned Iranian aggression and demanded its immediate cessation. The resolution aims to ensure regional stability and protect international interests.
