Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates — Attorney General Dr. Hamad Saif Al Shamsi issued arrest warrants for 25 individuals of various nationalities. He also ordered their immediate trial after they were found to be involved in disseminating and circulating digital content on online platforms. This content could mislead public opinion and harm national security and stability.
Dividing the accused according to the nature of the acts
The investigation revealed that the accused were divided into three groups. The first group published actual footage related to the attacks and their aftermath. This caused concern and panic among members of the community. Moreover, it allowed hostile accounts to use this material to promote misleading narratives about the security situation.
The second group used artificial intelligence techniques to spread fabricated videos. These videos included scenes of explosions, fires, or fake missile launches within the country. Additionally, Emirati names and national flags were added to lend the content a false air of authenticity.
The third group promoted the actions of a hostile state, glorifying its leadership and military activities. They also disseminated videos and images praising missile attacks on the country and portraying them as achievements. Thus, they served the hostile media narrative and harmed national interests.
Prosecution procedures and investigations
The Public Prosecution initiated an investigation into the accused and ordered their pretrial detention pending further investigation. The Public Prosecution affirmed that these actions constitute a serious violation of the law and warrant the necessary criminal proceedings.
Warning against exploiting digital space
The Attorney General emphasized that exploiting digital platforms to disseminate misleading content or videos that threaten public security or jeopardize the state’s defense capabilities, especially amidst current military tensions, constitutes a criminal offense. He noted this will be met with strict legal measures. He also affirmed that anyone found to be involved will be brought to justice to receive the appropriate legal punishment.
Continuous monitoring and an effective monitoring system
The prosecution explained that monitoring and follow-up efforts are ongoing to ensure that current events are not exploited to spread misleading information or fabricated content. This content is often aimed at undermining public security and inciting unrest in society.
This comes after an earlier announcement by Emirati authorities that 10 defendants of various nationalities had been referred to a swift trial. The charges against them relate to the dissemination of misleading and fabricated content through digital platforms.
