Cairo, Egypt – Major General Mohamed Abdel Wahed, advisor on national security and international relations, affirmed that the United Arab Emirates is among the world’s leading countries in combating terrorism. He added that combating terrorism has been a top priority in its domestic and foreign policy strategies since the events of September 11.
Abdul Wahid explained to “Sawt Al Emarat” that the UAE’s counterterrorism strategy is comprehensive. It is not limited to security and military measures alone, but also includes legislative, diplomatic, and media aspects, in addition to addressing the root causes of extremism and extremist ideology. This is what distinguishes it from many other countries that focus solely on the security aspect.
He noted that the UAE’s focus on combating terrorism intensified following the Arab Spring uprisings and the rise of ISIS. The UAE was a key partner in the international coalition against the group in 2014. He further explained that the Supreme National Security Council adopts a comprehensive strategy based on four main pillars: proactive intellectual, security, political, and diplomatic operations. This strategy also includes strengthening international intelligence cooperation and rehabilitating young people to counter extremist ideologies.
Major General Abdul Wahid highlighted the UAE’s legislative role, such as Federal Law No. 7 of 2014, in addition to establishing lists of wanted individuals and terrorist groups. He also mentioned efforts to cut off funding sources through combating money laundering and international coordination.
He also emphasized the importance of the intellectual and social dimensions within the strategy. This is achieved through supporting scientific research via specialized centers such as the Hedayah Center and the Sawab Center, as well as promoting a culture of moderation and tolerance through awareness programs. Furthermore, there is a focus on social and economic stability to reduce the environments conducive to recruitment. All of this is coordinated with intensive intelligence and research efforts at both the regional and international levels.
