Abu Dhabi, UAE – Anwar Gargash, diplomatic advisor to the UAE president, said on Tuesday that the Sudanese army’s loss of the city of El Fasher after a long siege represents a turning point that calls for prudence and realism, stressing that the political path is the only option to end the civil war in Sudan.
Gargash added, in a post on his X account, that the Quartet statement and the roadmap constitute the internationally supported framework for restoring stability in Sudan, stressing that the critical humanitarian situation cannot tolerate further military escalation.
The Emirati official’s remarks come after the Rapid Support Forces announced their control of El Fasher, the capital of North Darfur state, following months of fierce fighting. The city marks the latest and most significant military gain for the rebel forces since the outbreak of the war in April 2023.
