Cybersecurity Council: 70% of smart home devices are vulnerable to electronic hacks
The Council highlighted the risks associated with the use of child monitoring devices, which are now widely used
SHARE

Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates – The UAE government’s Cyber Security Council has warned of an increase in cyber attacks targeting smart homes.

He explained that 70% of Internet of Things devices used inside these homes are vulnerable to cyber attacks. This occurs if the necessary digital security measures are not taken.

The council explained that the most dangerous behaviors that could expose users to hacking include keeping the voice assistant in a constant state of operation. Additionally, automatically connecting to the Internet without ensuring the security of the network poses risks.

In addition to sharing the main Wi-Fi password with guests.

These practices may open technical vulnerabilities that allow attackers to access home data and control devices remotely.

The Council highlighted the risks associated with the use of child monitoring devices. These devices are now widely used in many homes.

He pointed out that these devices can be easily hacked by hackers if they are not secured.

This allows them to record conversations and track movements within the home. They can even talk directly with the child or individuals in the home.

To address these challenges, the Cybersecurity Council called for three key preventive recommendations:

Including “using strong passwords and constantly updating smart device systems”.

In addition to controlling all smart devices via one central device to reduce potential entry points.

Privacy Settings

The Council stressed the importance of turning off voice assistants when they are not needed. Also, activating security and privacy settings on all smart devices is crucial.

He advised users to choose devices based on their real needs only. Furthermore, users should avoid connecting devices to the Internet unnecessarily.

He also recommended the need to separate the Internet network for smart devices from the main home network.

The Cyber Security Council launched a weekly awareness campaign as part of the Cyber Pulse Initiative.

The fourth week of the campaign this year bears the slogan “Threats facing smart homes”.

This aims to raise awareness of the importance of updating digital programs and systems. It also provides guidance on how to confront various cyber threats.
