Spain – Recent data from the Spanish National Statistics Institute (INE) shows that the average annual rate of corporate bankruptcies in Spain decreased by 21.6% during the period from 2015 to 2024. However, a significant increase in bankruptcies was recorded during 2024.

According to statistics, 23 companies were declared bankrupt in 2024 based on court rulings, compared to only 13 in 2023, representing an increase of 76.9%.

The reduction includes all legal forms

Analyzing the data according to the legal form of companies, a decline in bankruptcy cases was observed across all types:
Sole proprietorships: a 100% decrease in the average annual rate of change.

Partnerships: A decrease of 25.2%.

Capital companies: a decrease of 18.2%.

Other/unknown companies: a decrease of 4.4%.

Specific sectors will lead in bankruptcy cases in 2024

استحوذت أنشطة الإقامة والخدمات الغذائية على أعلى نسبة من حالات الإفلاس في 2024، بنسبة 30.4% من الإجمالي.

Wholesale and retail trade and vehicle repair came in second place with 26.1%. The manufacturing and construction sectors tied for third place with 13% each.

Vital sectors such as electricity and water supply, transportation and financial activities recorded a bankruptcy rate of 4.3%.

Statistics for the period 2015-2024 also showed a decrease in the average annual rate of change in the number of verifications by 22.1%, as well as a decrease in the volume of confirmed liabilities by 40.3%, and the number of employees with claims by 42.9%.
