Berlin, Germany – Deutsche Bahn, the German railway company, announced that it has been facing a large-scale cyberattack since Tuesday afternoon. This has affected the group’s booking and information systems, including the DB Navigator app and its official website. The company confirmed the attack was significant and that its defense mechanisms were activated to repel it. It also clarified that no customer data was compromised.
The nature of the attack and its impact
A DDoS (Distributed Denial of Service) attack involves sending thousands of requests simultaneously to overwhelm the system. As a result, the website becomes unavailable, and the attack is typically intended for extortion, sabotage, or to exert political pressure on targeted companies or organizations.
Actions and Response
The company reported that some systems were temporarily restored on Wednesday afternoon. However, it did not rule out the possibility of new waves of attacks that could disrupt services again. It also indicated that the wave-like nature of the attack was the reason for the extended time it took to restore the systems.
