Abu Dhabi, UAE – Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company (Masdar) announced it has been awarded a contract to develop two photovoltaic solar power plants with a total capacity of 2 gigawatts (GW). These plants will be located in the Najran and Jazan regions of Saudi Arabia, as part of the sixth phase of the National Renewable Energy Program.
The two plants will be developed under the “independent power producer” model. Najran’s capacity will be 1,400 megawatts, while the Al-Darb plant in the Jazan region will have a capacity of 600 megawatts. A 25-year power purchase agreement has been signed with the Saudi Power Procurement Company. Al-Darb is expected to enter commercial operation in late 2027, while Najran’s capacity will begin during the first half of 2028.
Mohamed Jameel Al Ramahi, Chief Executive Officer of Masdar, said: “Masdar is proud to contribute to supporting the achievement of Saudi Vision 2030’s renewable energy goals. The development of the Najran and Al Darb projects represents an important addition to our investment portfolio in the Kingdom.”
Founded in 2006, Masdar aims to increase its production capacity to 100 gigawatts by 2030. Its portfolio of projects exceeds 51 gigawatts. Its projects in Saudi Arabia include a 300-megawatt solar power plant in Jeddah and the 400-megawatt Dumat Al Jandal wind farm, the largest of its kind in the Middle East.
