Italy, Europe – Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni strongly condemned the attempted targeting of one of Italy’s most prominent journalists after a bomb blast targeted his car in Rome. She described the incident as a “cowardly attack aimed at silencing free speech and instilling fear among journalists.”

  • Broad solidarity

Meloni said in an official statement issued by the Prime Minister’s Office, “Freedom of the press is a pillar of Italian democracy. We will not allow anyone—whoever they are—to threaten it or silence the courageous journalists who reveal the truth.”

Accident details

The explosion occurred late Thursday evening outside the home of a journalist known for his bold investigations into organized crime and political corruption. The blast severely damaged his car, but no one was injured.

Italian police imposed a security cordon around the explosion site and opened an urgent investigation with the participation of explosives experts. Security sources suggested the incident was a threatening message in connection with the recent revelations made by the journalist.

Broad solidarity

The attack sparked widespread solidarity within the media and political circles. The Italian Journalists’ Union expressed “grave concern” over the escalating intimidation of journalists, calling on the government to provide special protection for threatened journalists.

A number of opposition leaders also condemned the incident, stressing that “freedom of the press is indivisible, and any attack on it is an attack on the state itself.”

Concluding her statement, Meloni affirmed that her government would pursue the case to the end. She also explained that “those who attempt to spread fear among those who hold the pen in defense of the truth will not escape justice.”
