Cairo, Egypt – Former US President Donald Trump sparked widespread controversy after describing Russian President Vladimir Putin’s proposal for the New START nuclear arms reduction treaty as a “good idea.” Observers viewed the statement as a hint that Trump wants to reshape his relationship with Moscow. He may be seeking to open a new chapter in strategic understandings if he returns to the White House.

Trump said in his statements that “the world needs wise leaders capable of averting nuclear catastrophe.” He noted that Putin’s proposal to extend the treaty or reformulate it to reflect international changes “deserves serious consideration.”

Trump’s statements come amid escalating tensions between Russia and the West over the war in Ukraine. This comes amid an accelerating arms race and a decline in trust between Washington and Moscow. The trust level is at its lowest since the Cold War.

Analysts believe that Trump seeks, through this stance, to send a dual message. The first is to American voters, stating that he is the man capable of “bringing the world back to the negotiating table, rather than the brink of war.” The second is to the Kremlin, stating that “there is no objection to a new understanding.” This would reshape the global balance of power if he returns to power.

The New START Treaty, signed in 2010 between the United States and Russia, aims to limit the number of strategic nuclear warheads deployed by both sides. It is the only treaty remaining between the two nuclear powers. This comes after Washington withdrew from several previous agreements under the Trump administration.

Observers point out that Trump’s praise of Putin at this time has clear electoral implications. This is especially noted with the US presidential election approaching. The Republican leader attempts to portray himself as a statesman capable of restoring the “lost international balance.” This contrasts with the Biden administration’s policies, which he accuses of having “pushed the world to the brink of the abyss.”
