Cairo, Egypt – In a remarkable political shift reflecting the rising influence of the populist right in Britain, Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced his government’s intention to abolish the so-called “golden ticket.” This ticket allows refugees to automatically resettle and reunite with their relatives. The move is a direct response to pressure from the Reform Party, led by Nigel Farage.

According to The Guardian, the British government plans to strip asylum seekers of current privileges. These include the right to invite spouses and children to live with them in the UK. Granting permanent residency will also be linked to an individual’s contribution to society. This is instead of solely securing asylum via migrant boats across the English Channel.

Government sources explained that the new policies aim to reduce Britain’s “attractiveness” as a destination for asylum seekers. This comes after London was widely criticized for offering greater protection than other European countries. One official said, “We have been accused of being overly generous, and this has made the country a magnet for illegal immigrants. Now we are seeking to reduce those factors.”

These moves come ahead of the European Political Group summit scheduled for Thursday. The summit will feature European leaders to discuss ways to combat illegal immigration.
