Cairo, Egypt – The war on Gaza has entered its 718th day. This comes amid ongoing military escalation and renewed Israeli airstrikes targeting various areas of the Strip, leaving casualties. Political and diplomatic pressure on Israel is increasing following a series of successive recognitions of a Palestinian state by Western powers.

Highlights
  • Continuous military escalation
  • International recognition of Palestine
  • Israeli-American rejection
  • Pressures at the United Nations
  • An ongoing human tragedy

Continuous military escalation

The Israeli army launched a series of airstrikes on residential neighborhoods in and around Gaza City. The raids resulted in casualties, including women and children. Palestinian media reported that at least four people were killed in a bombing that targeted a residential building on Omar al-Mukhtar Street. Two fishermen were killed by Israeli naval fire off the coast of Khan Yunis, in the southern Gaza Strip.

Meanwhile, the Israeli army announced the death of a major commanding a company in the 77th Battalion during fighting in northern Gaza. This brings the number of Israeli officers and soldiers killed since the outbreak of the war to 911, according to figures announced from Tel Aviv.

International recognition of Palestine

Politically, the halls of the United Nations witnessed a development described as historic. This came with the announcement by France and several other European countries of their official recognition of the State of Palestine, in an effort to intensify pressure on Israel to end the war that has been ongoing for more than two years.

This move came just one day after similar recognitions from Britain, Canada, Australia, and Portugal. This reflects a growing wave of international recognition aimed at reviving the two-state solution and halting the cycle of violence.

Israeli-American rejection

Israel and the United States quickly rejected these recognitions, describing them as unilateral measures that would undermine ongoing diplomatic efforts. Tel Aviv believes these steps grant Hamas and its allies international legitimacy, while Washington views them as an obstacle to what it calls a “balanced negotiating track.”

Pressures at the United Nations

Meanwhile, the UN General Assembly meetings continued in New York. French President Emmanuel Macron and other leaders called for an immediate ceasefire and the start of a serious political process leading to a two-state solution. Diplomatic sources confirm that the successive recognitions of Palestine represent a clear message to Israel that the international community’s patience is running out. Furthermore, the continuation of the war is no longer acceptable politically or humanitarianally.

An ongoing human tragedy

On the ground, the humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip is worsening as thousands continue to flee from the north of the Strip to the south. This is all happening amid widespread destruction of infrastructure and severe shortages of food, medicine, and fuel. Aid organizations are describing the situation as a “prolonged catastrophe.” They warn that continued military operations threaten a total collapse of civilian life in the besieged Strip.
