Madrid, Spain – Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez condemned the racist incident that occurred during the friendly match between Egypt and Spain, emphasizing his complete rejection of such behavior that tarnishes his country’s image.
The match, held Tuesday evening at Espanyol’s stadium in Barcelona, was marred by inappropriate behavior from some Spanish fans. This included directing hostile chants at the Egyptian players during the opening minutes, a pattern that continued throughout the first half and after the break, as well as booing during the Egyptian national anthem.
Sánchez wrote on his official X account: “Yesterday’s incident in Cornellà is unacceptable and must not be repeated.” He added: “We cannot allow an unruly minority to tarnish the image of Spain, a diverse and tolerant country, nor the image of our national team and its fans.”
The Prime Minister concluded his remarks by saying: “My full support goes to the athletes who were subjected to these actions, and my appreciation goes to everyone who contributes respectfully to making our country better.”
It is worth noting that the match ended in a goalless draw, as both teams prepare for the 2026 World Cup.
