Cairo, Egypt – The Egyptian Football Association strongly condemned the events that occurred during the national team’s match against Spain. The match was held at Espanyol’s stadium in Barcelona.
The match, which ended in a goalless draw, was marred by inappropriate behavior from some Spanish fans. This included booing during the Egyptian national anthem and chanting racist slogans.
In an official statement, the federation strongly condemned such behavior. It described these actions as “abhorrent racism” that contradicts sporting values and the principles of fair play. The federation also stressed that such conduct has no place in football stadiums.
The Egyptian Football Association appreciated the condemnations issued by the Spanish Football Federation and the Spanish Ministry of Sport. It also acknowledged the stances taken by a number of Spanish football stars. The Association affirmed that these responses reflect a shared awareness of the seriousness of such phenomena and the necessity of confronting them.
The statement indicated that Hani Abu Rida, by virtue of his international position, continues to coordinate with FIFA and all relevant parties. This coordination aims to confront and reduce racism in stadiums globally.
In closing, the Egyptian Football Association emphasized that these individual actions will not affect the distinguished relationship it shares with its Spanish counterpart, especially given the warm welcome the national team delegation received in Barcelona. The Association affirmed that Egypt will always welcome all people to its land, based on the values of respect and tolerance.
