Liverpool, England – Former Liverpool managing director Christian Purslow has spoken about the behind-the-scenes story of Egyptian star Mohamed Salah’s departure from the club at the end of the season on a free transfer. He emphasized that fan expectations played a significant role in evaluating Salah’s time at Anfield.
Liverpool had announced Salah’s departure at the end of the season, despite him being under contract until the following season, a move that sparked widespread controversy, especially given the player’s significant role within the team over the past years.
Purslow explained, in comments reported by the website “rousingthekop,” that Salah’s decision to leave stems from the player’s desire for a new challenge. He indicated that Salah’s declining performance this season was one of the contributing factors.
He added that the transfer market is now governed by clear criteria, most notably high salaries, age, and reputation. He explained that clubs are no longer inclined to pay huge sums to acquire players over thirty.
He continued: “Cristiano Ronaldo is a prime example, and I think many people wished to see Mohamed Salah follow the same path, but the reality is different”.
Purslow noted that the Saudi Professional League was the most likely destination for Salah, according to speculation. However, he emphasized that policies have recently changed. Saudi clubs no longer rely on signing older players for huge sums as they did previously.
He concluded his remarks by emphasizing that “the era of saving European clubs, especially Premier League clubs, by selling their players in their thirties for large sums of money, has already ended. This is due to the changing trends in the market in recent years”.
