Madrid, Spain – Real Madrid has decided to file a formal appeal against the red card shown to their player Federico Valverde. The incident occurred during the derby match against Atlético Madrid, in the 29th round of La Liga.
Valverde was shown a straight red card in the 77th minute after fouling his opponent from behind in midfield. Referee José Munuera Montero issued the red card without consulting VAR.
According to the Spanish newspaper Marca, the referee’s report stated that the red card was due to “an excessively forceful challenge on an opponent while the ball was out of play.” This is classified as a dangerous tackle without an attempt to play the ball.
According to La Liga regulations, such cases usually warrant a two-match suspension. Therefore, if the ban is upheld, Valverde could miss Real Madrid’s matches against Real Mallorca and Girona.
The newspaper indicated that Real Madrid’s management is moving to appeal the decision, hoping to have the red card overturned or the suspension reduced. This could allow the player to participate as soon as possible.
