Cairo, Egypt – The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has announced the sanctions related to the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations final match between Morocco and Senegal.
The match witnessed controversial events, after the Senegalese players left the field following the awarding of a penalty kick to Morocco in the final seconds of regular time, before later returning to complete the match.
The Senegalese national team won the African Cup of Nations title, after defeating Morocco 1-0.
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) imposed severe penalties on the two national teams, as follows:
Sanctions against the Senegal national team
Pape Thiaw, the coach of the Senegalese national team, has been suspended for five official matches due to his unsportsmanlike conduct and for damaging the reputation of the game, and has been fined $100,000.
Senegal’s Elman Ndiaye has been suspended for two official matches for unsportsmanlike conduct towards the referee. Ismaila Sarr received the same punishment.
The Senegalese Football Federation was fined $300,000 for the inappropriate behavior of its fans, in addition to another $300,000 for the unsportsmanlike conduct of the players and coaching staff, and $15,000 for the team’s misconduct, after five players received warnings.
Sanctions for the Moroccan national team
The protest submitted by the Moroccan Football Federation against the Senegalese Federation was rejected.
Moroccan international Achraf Hakimi has been suspended for two official matches, one of which is suspended and will be activated if he repeats the offense within a year. Ismail Saïbari has also been suspended for three official matches for unsportsmanlike conduct and fined $100,000.
The Moroccan Football Federation was fined $200,000 for the inappropriate behavior of the ball boys, $100,000 for the players and coaching staff entering the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) area and obstructing the referee’s work, in addition to $15,000 for the fans’ use of laser beams, for a total of $315,000.
